The increasing population density in urban areas simultaneously impacts the trend of energy consumption in building sectors and the urban heat island (UHI) effects of urban infrastructure. Accordingly, passive design strategies to create sustainable buildings play a major role in addressing these issues, while solar envelopes prove to be a relevant concept that specifically considers the environmental performance aspects of a proposed building given their local contexts. As significant advances have been made over the past decades regarding the development and implementation of computational solar envelopes, this study presents a comprehensive review of solar envelopes while specifically taking into account design parameters, digital tools, and the implementation of case studies in various contextual settings. This extensive review is conducted in several stages. First, an investigation of the scope and procedural steps of the review is conducted to frame the boundary of the topic to be analyzed within the conceptual framework of solar envelopes. Second, comparative analyses between categorized design methods in parallel with a database of design parameters are conducted, followed by an in-depth discussion of the criteria for the digital tools and case studies extracted from the selected references. Third, knowledge gaps are identified, and the future development of solar envelopes is discussed to complete the review. This study ultimately provides an inclusive understanding for designers and architects regarding the progressive methods of the development of solar envelopes during the conceptual design stage.

Cet article propose un retour réflexif sur le modèle de l’enveloppe solaire. Il s’agit d’un regard rétrospectif des approches numériques de ce modèle qui se voulait dès le départ servir l’activité de conception. Le développement des modèles de calcul énergétique a permis d’affiner la détermination de ses contraintes. L’avancée numérique a donné lieu à des enveloppes dérivées intégrant, en plus de l’accès solaire, des paramètres physiques ou réglementaires. Cependant, l’avancée numérique de l’enveloppe solaire n’est pas utilisée pour répondre aux défis climatiques actuels. Ce papier propose de dresser un état de l'art de l'enveloppe solaire, de ses développements et de ses applications en vue de comprendre en quoi la promesse des années soixante-dix est aujourd’hui réaliste. C’est l’occasion aussi de discuter le rôle que joue le progrès scientifique et technique de la morphose numérique dans les pratiques architecturales et urbaines.

Sunlight has always played an important role in the design of human settlements. Well-designed urban structures, especially in moderate or cold climates, should be assured of direct sunlight in indoor living spaces and also in public spaces. Direct sunlight in a built environment is an important factor for health and well-being, the effective functioning of solar systems, and sustainable construction. However, many problems involved in the exercise of rights of access to sunlight can arise when sunlight is obscured by a tall cityscape. Many states, regions, and cities regulate solar access, but solar rights and landowner rights are in a permanent conflict. The high urban density of many cities with tall skyscrapers accentuates the problem of the availability of sunlight. This paper presents a review of existing regulations and metrics for ensuring the availability of direct sunlight in buildings and of assessment methods that have been adopted in multiple countries and cities. Approaches, methods, and tools of rights of access to sunlight are critically analyzed. The paper also details experiences from former socialist countries where strict long-term strict on direct access to sunlight in flats were applied.
