Objective: To get to know the adaptation process experienced by a woman, motivated by the birth of a child with cerebral palsy. Methods:The investigation was performed with a descriptive, exploratory methodology, focusing on the qualitative approach. Six women, mothers of children with brain palsy, participated in the study. Data collection happened in an institution that delivers care to children with special needs, located in a town of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Results: data analysis revealed that the woman abdicates from her social, professional and even personal life to take better care of her child. Besides, these mothers were shown to need psychosocioeconomic support from their families and the people who surround them, in both the process of initial adaptation and overcoming and the whole period of care for the child. Conclusion: The woman assumes and experiences the responsibility of taking care of the child with special needs. Métodos: A investigação contemplou uma metodologia descritiva, exploratória à luz de uma abordagem qualitativa. Participaram do estudo seis mulheres, mães de crianças portadoras de paralisia cerebral. A coleta dos dados foi realizada numa instituição que atende crianças portadoras de necessidades especiais, localizada em um município do Rio Grande do Sul. Resultados: A análise dos dados revelou abdicação, pela mulher, da vida social, profissional e, até mesmo pessoal, em prol do cuidado de seu filho. Além disso, essas mães demonstraram necessitar de apoio psico-sócio-econômico familiar e das pessoas que as cercam, tanto durante o processo de adaptação e superação vivencial inicial, quanto durante todo o período do cuidado à criança. Conclusão: A mulher assume e vivencia a responsabilidade pelo cuidado do filho portador de necessidades especiais. Purpose: to analyze and to compare parents and therapists perceptions regarding of early intervention effects in developing of their children, as well as child's development and future outlook. Methods: this research studied nine individuals from Early Intervention Clinic. Parents and responsible were interviewed. They were recorded and literately transcribed. The information was analyzed qualitatively and confronted considering the following child development aspects: linguistic, motor, social and psychic.Results: seven out of nine individuals analyzed showed similar parental and therapeutic perception concerning the development characteristics analyzed. In two cases, there was disagreement between family members and therapists regarding children development, when family members expressed different expectations from the therapists about the future of their child. Regarding communication advances, all parents and therapist realized improvements. Conclusions: the perception of therapists and parents demonstrated positive effects of interdisciplinary early intervention as manifested in the concordance between therapists and parents views in seven out of nine individuals analyzed. This study also reinforced the importance of conducting a qualified monitoring of family difficulties regarding to limitation of their children and guide them appropriately depending on the disease or disorder presented. Keywords: Child Development; Early Intervention (Education); Child Language RESUMO Objetivo: analisar e comparar a percepção dos pais e dos terapeutas referente aos efeitos da intervenção precoce no desenvolvimento de seus filhos, bem como acerca da evolução da criança e perspectivas futuras. Métodos: participaram deste estudo nove sujeitos, incluídos na clínica de Intervenção Precoce. Para a coleta dos dados realizaram-se entrevistas com os pais e/ou responsáveis pelas crianças e com os terapeutas de referência, as quais foram gravadas em áudio e transcritas literalmente. As informações foram analisadas qualitativamente e confrontadas, considerando os aspectos do desenvolvimento linguístico, motor, social e psíquico das crianças. Resultados: dos nove sujeitos analisados, sete apresentaram percepção parental e terapêutica semelhante para as questões do desenvolvimento abordadas e em dois casos houve divergência entre a visão dos familiares e dos terapeutas acerca do desenvolvimento das crianças, em que os familiares demonstram expectativas muito distintas das dos terapeutas quanto ao futuro dos filhos. Em relação à comunicação, todos os pais percebem avanços como as terapeutas. Conclusão: a percepção das terapeutas e pais demonstrou efeitos positivos da intervenção precoce interdisciplinar, manifestada na concordância de pontos de vista em relação aos sete dos nove sujeitos analisados. O estudo reforçou, ainda, a importância de se realizar a escuta qualificada das dificuldades da família quanto à limitação de seus filhos e orientá-las adequadamente a depender da patologia e/ou distúrbio apresentado.

This study develops a theoretical model concerning the experience of families of children with Down syndrome in preschool and school age. The frameworks used were Symbolic Interactionism and Grounded Theory. Semi-structured interviews were used as the instrument of investigation and ten families participated in the study. The Theoretical Model "Seeking the child's independence and autonomy through constant stimulation" was identified, which shows the family's efforts to enable the child to develop the best s/he can through stimulation in order to become less dependent in the future. This model can be used to facilitate interaction with the family and can be further expanded. Nurses should use spaces dedicated to care delivery to establish bonds with the family, and seek other spaces families frequent, to better meet their needs, since there are significant gaps in care and research addressing this population. Instead, they should be welcomed and seen as a partner in care delivery. Independencia del niño con síndrome de Down: la experiencia de la familia El objetivo del trabajo fue desarrollar un Modelo Teórico sobre la experiencia de familias de niños con síndrome de Down en edad pre escolar y escolar. Los marcos utilizados fueron el Interaccionismo Simbólico y la Teoría Fundamentada en los Datos. Utilizamos la entrevista semiestructurada como instrumento de investigación, siendo que diez familias participaron del estudio. Se identificó el Modelo Teórico: "Buscando la independencia y autonomía del niño a través de la estimulación constante", que muestra el esfuerzo por obtener el mejor desarrollo del niño a través de estimulaciones, para un futuro menos dependiente. Esto puede ser tomado como facilitador de la interacción con la familia, con perspectivas de ser ampliado. El enfermero debe aprovechar espacios de actuación para establecer vínculos con la familia, buscar los escenarios predominantemente frecuentados por ella, para atender mejor sus demandas, ya que existen lagunas significativas de atención e investigación junto a esta población, que precisa ser acogida y tratada como aliada en el cuidado.Descriptores: Síndrome de Down; Enfermería de la Familia; Enfermería Pediátrica.
