Concentration Levels and Ecological Risks of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Surface Sediments of Tianjin Coastal Area, China

Abstract: Sediments were sampled from different surface water bodies in Tianjin coastal area, China, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured using GC/MS or GC/ECD. The purposes were to investigate the concentration levels of the POPs and to assess their ecological risks. The results showed that all the 16 priority PAHs were detected from the 10 s… Show more

“…Fresh surface sediment (b5 m depth) and river water were sampled from Hai River in Tianjin, China in December of 2012. The geographic information of the sampling location and chemical parameters were previously reported (Lu et al, 2013). Sediment samples were collected in zip-lock bags with enough headspace for aeration and river water was saved in polypropylene containers.…”

“…POPs are a general term for organic pollutants synthesized by humans, with four characteristics of long-term residual, bioaccumulative, semi-volatile and highly toxic [54,55] . Persistent organic pollutants are extremely difficult to degrade and can exist in nature for a long time.…”

“…For example, the concentration of POPs is found in water samples from the Taihu Lake region and the Tianjin coastal region. The sediments in the Hudso River and the Humber River in the United Kingdom are also highly concentrated [54,55] ; 14 kinds of organochlorine pesticides such as HCHs, DDTs and endosulfan II were detected in the tissues of the mites on the migration route of East Asia-Australia, among which α-HCH, β-HCH and γ-HCH were checked out. The detection rates of p,p'-DDE, endosulfan II, endosulfan sulfate and/or p,p'-DDT are all 100% [59] .…”

“…The greatest concentration of PBDEs was detected in the Bailong River, Laizhou Bay, with concentrations as great as 1800 ng g À1 dw (Jin et al, 2008;Pan et al, 2011a). In areas adjacent to Bohai Bay, rivers flowing into the Bohai Sea were most heavily contaminated by PBDEs, with the highest concentration of 42.79 ng g À1 dw (Gan, 2010;Lu et al, 2007aLu et al, , 2012Pan et al, 2010;Song et al, 2016;Zhao et al, 2012). Three studies were conducted to investigate PBDEs in sediment in the Liaohe River Basin.…”
