Concentration of mine saline water in high-efficiency hybrid RO–NF system

Abstract: a b s t r a c tTo obtain higher concentration of sodium chloride than in reverse osmosis (RO), the hybrid RO-nanofiltration (NF) system was applied. The use of RO retentate pressure as a driving force in NF decreased the energy consumption in the brine concentration process and increased RO permeate recovery. In such a hybrid system, NF could be regarded as an alternative method of energy recovery. Five NF membranes were tested on the synthetic sodium chloride solution, conducted at 40 bar, with highest reject… Show more

“…The NF shows an efficiency to reduce these elements; indeed, SO 4 2− was reduced by 83% and Na + and Cl − were reduced, respectively, by 61% and 55%. Several researchers note that NF is characterized by a high rejection coefficient of multivalent ions (up to 90% for sulfate ions) compared to monovalent ions such as Na + and Cl − (less than 60%) [50,51]. Knowing that RO is a water desalination technique, we assumed that the BT water subjected to RO complies with the standards regarding major ions.…”

“…Moreover, the higher pressure/smaller pore size membranes as NF and RO membranes are used in appropriate cases due to higher expenses. [132] A super-hydrophilic membrane is selected explicitly for separation of oil-water emulsion because it enables a water layer formed on the membrane, [55] and could block oil droplet form to contact surface or enter to pores of membrane; then, the membrane will show a high efficiency for oil removal with a low membrane fouling. Generally, membrane wettability plays an important role, and it highly depends upon surface architecture.…”

“…Another proposed improvement of ZOD technology included the application of NF on the RO retentate [ 30 ] ( Figure 3 ). As described above, RO is used in ZOD technology to pre-concentrate the low-salinity coal mine waters before the vapor compression evaporator.…”

“…The NF, in fact, works as an alternative energy recovery device, which also influences the ionic composition. The calculations presented in [ 30 ] showed that energy consumption in the RO–NF evaporator system decreased by 40% compared to the RO evaporator system.…”
