Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, is accessed by over 1.5 billion users each month, yet remains stigmatized in the academic world. Many faculty demonstrate reluctance in allowing students to use Wikipedia as part of their research and writing projects due to the open access nature of the site and have all but banned its use in their courses. In this article, we evaluate implications of our pedagogical decision to embed a Wikipedia editing assignment into our respective undergraduate courses at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in South Texas. First, we describe students’ initial reactions to Wikipedia as disrupting the classroom. Second, we examine the outcomes of the assignment in our Latinx students’ recognizing their work on Wikipedia as an act of decolonizing the classroom. In particular, we show the extent to which students a) claim authority, b) develop an ownership of knowledge, c) forge identities as public scholars, and d) develop a civic responsibility through their work on Wikipedia. We conclude with a discussion of recommendations for implementing assignments on digital citizenship in college classrooms, particularly in HSIs.

Esta investigación buscaba identificar las teorías, prácticas y procesos de gestión de los centros y programas de escritura en universidades de América Latina. Para ello, se propuso un estudio exploratorio que tuvo como principal instrumento un cuestionario en línea. Participaron en la investigación 23 directores de centros y programas de escritura de la región. Los resultados evidencian una variedad de programas muy jóvenes en su conformación. La escritura empieza a incluirse en las agendas programáticas de las universidades latinoamericanas, teniendo en cuenta el respaldo institucional conferido a estas iniciativas en los últimos 10 años. Respecto a los fundamentos teóricos, se encontró una diversidad de enfoques y posturas teóricas que configuran estos centros y programas de forma distinta a sus antecesores en Norteamérica. Los programas incorporan prácticas que tienen que ver, en su mayoría, con el acompañamiento individual a través de tutorías o con el trabajo colaborativo entre docentes de lengua y docentes de otras disciplinas. La gestión administrativa plantea un desafío especial en cuanto a la medición del impacto de los programas. Los directores asumen una serie de funciones que requieren de una capacitación integral en tareas administrativas, con la cual no se cuenta aún en la región. Estos resultados evidencian la necesidad de fortalecer los procesos de gestión de estas iniciativas y la pertinencia de consolidar un campo propio de investigación.

Abstract: The following reflective essay focuses on the use of citations within academic disciplines. It focuses on my experiences and how these experiences relate to published literature. Moreover, as an individual in the discipline of neuroscience, this essay will focus largely on how citations apply to the discipline of neuroscience. Specifically, how the act of citing develops an individual’s rhetorical appeal and connectivity to the individual’s discipline.
