BACKGROUND: Patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) treated by coil embolization may experience illness uncertainty despite successful treatment. This study aimed to investigate illness uncertainty in patients with UIAs treated by coil embolization and to identify the factors affecting illness uncertainty. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved data collected from 267 patients with UIAs who received coil embolization within 2 years at a tertiary hospital in South Korea. The data were collected through structured questionnaires and the patients' medical records. The questionnaires included information on sociodemographic characteristics, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale data. We collected clinical characteristics through the medical records. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, an independent t test, a 1-way analysis of variance, and a Pearson correlation test. We used a multiple linear regression analysis with significant variables in the univariate analysis to determine which variables had a significant impact on illness uncertainty. RESULTS: The mean Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale score was 52.33 (12.93). We identified age (P = .002), education level (high school graduation, P = .014; college or higher, P < .001), anxiety (P < .001), and social support (P < .001) as factors affecting illness uncertainty. CONCLUSION: Patients with UIAs who underwent coil embolization did not exhibit severe illness uncertainty. The factors affecting illness uncertainty were age, educational level, anxiety, and social support. This study provides insight into illness uncertainty in this patient population and may help develop appropriate nursing interventions.

While research on spiritual education is increasing, spirituality is still recognized to be an abstract, difficult, and ambiguous concept. The purpose of this study is to define the concept of spirituality clearly by considering the concept and exploring the direction of spiritual education in secondary education. Spirituality can be defined according to vertical and horizontal dimensions. First, the vertical dimension implies metaphysical and religious meaning concerning a relationship with a higher and transcendental being in a specific individual context that goes beyond the existing understanding of individualistic, inner-centered, and afterlife-centered spirituality. Second, the horizontal dimension includes existential meaning in social and environmental relationships, meaning relationships with self, others, and nature. Thus, spirituality is "expansion of consciousness about transcendent existence." This emphasizes spirituality linked to temporal life, exemplifying the need to fulfil social responsibility and the possibility of practicing it. Moreover, it serves as a basis for escaping from the narrow perception of interpreting spirituality only from an excessively mystical or rationalistic perspective in the past. Spiritual education in schools needs to teach both horizontal and vertical dimensions harmoniously.

Self-Efficacy and Self-Care Behavior in Patients with Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysm after Treatment with Coil Embolization

Background: This study aimed to identify the self-efficacy and self-care behaviors in patients with an unruptured intracranial aneurysm who have undergone coil embolization.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to 143 patients who were diagnosed with unruptured intracranial aneurysm and visited the outpatient department of radiology for follow-up management after performing coil embolization at a tertiary hospital, Seoul. The self-efficacy and self-care behaviors were measured using self-reported questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed with independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation using the SPSS/win 26.0 statistical programs (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY, USA).Results: The mean score of self-efficacy in patients with an unruptured intracranial aneurysm was 3.49±0.55 out of 5. The mean score of self-care behaviors was 3.69±0.66 out of 5. The self-efficacy exhibited statistically significant differences depending on the size and number of the cerebral aneurysms and the presence of such aneurysms remaining after treatment. There was a positive correlation between self-efficacy and self-care behaviors (r=0.37, P=0.001). Regression analysis revealed that the patient's self-care behaviors of the patients was explained by self-efficacy (β=0.37, P<0.001) and these variables explained 13.3% of the variance in self-care behaviors (F=22.86, P<0.001).Conclusions: In order to increase self-care behaviors, it is necessary to develop self-efficacy interventions so that an unruptured intracranial aneurysm who have undergone coil embolization can effectively cope with various difficulties during treatment course.
