Concomitant positive patch test results with standard screening tray in North America 1985–1989

Abstract: Responses to patch test substances may occur contemporaneously. Such simultaneous reactions may reflect concomitant sensitization to 2 dissimilar allergens to which concurrent exposure has taken place (e.g., ethylenediamine dihydrochloride and neomycin). It may occur when the individual has been exposed to only 1 of the substances and exhibits a response to other substances of similar chemical structure (i.e., cross-sensitization such as between para-phenylenediamine and benzocaine). Such simultaneous response… Show more

“…Males showed a significantly less incidence of positive reactions to the patch test allergens than females, a phenomenon that has been reported in many Western studies till date. [1,5] In our cases, hand eczema was the commonest clinical diagnosis and this is more in conformity with studies from outside India than the Indian studies on this subject. [5,6] In Indian studies, either footwear dermatitis or airborne contact dermatitis predominate in patients in patch test clinics.…”

[5,6] In Indian studies, either footwear dermatitis or airborne contact dermatitis predominate in patients in patch test clinics. [3,4] Among topical antimicrobials, neomycin and gentamicin were the commonest allergens [ Table 1], clearly demonstrating the hazards of the rampant use of these antimicrobials in topical medications.…”

“…To date, the prevalence of positive patch test re-action to PPD ranges from 2.0% to 4.8% in the general population. [9][10][11][12][13] A study by Patel et al 10 in London shows a linear increasing trend of the percentage of patients with allergic reactions to a PPD patch test from 2% in 1990 to 7.1% in 2005. Although not solely due to the increasing use of henna tattoos worldwide, this may contribute significantly to the increase in positive reactions to PPD in the general population, especially in children.…”
