Conditions for Success in a Community Based Conservation Initiative: An Analysis of Triggering Moments and Catalytic Elements in Nuha

Abstract: What accounts for a successful community-based conservation (CBC) initiative? A bulk of studies has answered the question by identifying the principles as well as underlying relations that make up successful cases. However, rarely do they extend to examine the basic elements (or ingredients) that contribute to a successful case. Using the analytic framing of triggering moments and catalytic elements, this study describes the key factors that contributed to ongoing successes in achieving the outputs and goals o… Show more

“…A second contribution by Sirimorok and Rusdianto (2020b) takes us to the conceptual dimensions of community conservation arrangements by asking the provocative question of what conditions determine whether community conservation will succeed. They apply a common framework from the literature on the commons and downscale it to a specific case in Nuha, South Sulawesi.…”

“…Research from Maluku, for example, (Salampessy et al, 2017), highlights the flaws of social forestry policy applications for its overly formulaic solutions, as middlemen co-opted the process that led to the dispossession of forest cultivators to their groves of cloves. A number of the contributions to this special section also seek to explore these and other formally supported community-based or co-management arrangements, ranging from a close examination of local institutions and their practices related to conservation (Batiran and Salim, 2020;Sirimorok and Safriyanto, 2020b), or more explicit community conservation partnerships initiated and supported by the state and other partners to develop new models for managing forest and coastal/marine areas (Anugrahsari et al, 2020;Sirimorok and Rusdianto, 2020a;Sirimorok and Rusdianto, 2020b). Nevertheless, there is much more to be explored among these and other policy prescriptions for involving communities in conservation from across this vast region.…”

“…More recently, a growing body of literature has started to explore stories of 'success' in relation to communitybased governance of natural resources (e.g. Mortimore 2005;Galvin et al 2018;Haller and Merten 2018;Sirimorok and Rusdianto 2020). Beyond questioning the prevailing narrative of degradation and confict, this literature also proposes ways forward through identifying means to catalyze change towards more positive outcomes and showing that alternative futures are possible (Bennett et al 2016).…”
