Conditions of the Presence of Bimodal Amplitude Distribution of Two-Process Surfaces

Abstract: Two-process surfaces are functionally important. They contain plateau and valley parts. They are created by superimpositions of two one-process textures of Gaussian probability height distributions. It is expected that the resulting two-process surface would have bimodal height probability distribution. However, typically two-process textures have unimodal ordinate distribution. The present authors developed limiting conditions of presence of bimodal ordinate distribution. These conditions depend on the materi… Show more

“…The values of skewness (0.4) and kurtosis (2.28) of the milled surface are typical for textures after cutting. In addition, the probability distribution of the milled surface is two-modal [35,36]. From the analysis of values of skewness and kurtosis and from the analysis of probability distributions of the analyzed textures (Figure 3), one can conclude that surfaces after burnishing are random, of the ordinate distributions similar to Gaussian, while the milled surface is deterministic.…”

“…However, the probability height distribution of two-process surfaces is rarely bimodal. In [ 107 ] the limiting conditions of the bimodal height probability distribution of the two-process surfaces were developed. When the Smq parameter is greater than 50%, a unimodal amplitude distribution occurs.…”

“…To verify the accuracy of the lognormal distribution characterization model, the characterization model was used to calculate the distribution of the normal declination angle. The results were compared with the normal distribution characterization model [23], Beckmann distribution characterization model [24], and exponential distribution characterization model [25].…”
