Conductivity of Some Molten Chlorides at Elevated Temperatures I. Experimental and Calculation Techniques for BeCl2, ZnCl2, and PbCl2

Abstract: A cell for the electrical conductivity measurements of molten salts at the elevated temperatures and vapor pressures of several tens of atmospheres was constructed. The electrical conductivities of molten BeCl 2 , ZnCl 2 , and PbCl 2 were measured up to temperatures of (823, 1421, and 1320) K, respectively. The melts density was estimated, and molar conductivities at the same temperatures were calculated.

“…Association in this melt is well established on the basis of a number of structural studies. 92−94 For PbCl 2 , the structural evidence for association is less certain, 105 with X-ray and neutron scattering reports 106−108 yielding different Pb−Cl coordination numbers. The resistance coefficients, however, show the same behavior as ZnCl 2 , suggesting ion association does take place in the melt, though the r ij are smaller in size and the viscosity is less.…”

“…However, because of the structural characteristic of the monomer, it was compelled to us that this strategy will limit the number of plausible outputs and may allow us to achieve the final awaited structure. We opted to use 1,3,5,7-tetracyanoadamantane (TCA) as a new tetrahedral building block to construct POPs by ionic liquid 19,31 of molten ZnCl 2 as the solvent and catalyst because of TCA's rigidity and it can topologically lead to POPs with ctn or bor topology ( Fig. 1) 6,32 .…”

“…The utilization of the monomer (TCA) and ZnCl 2 by ionothermal synthesis gives rise to five POPs under similar experimental conditions except for the amount of molten ZnCl 2 , an ionic liquid used as the solvent and catalyst. 19,31 The mass ratio of ZnCl 2 /TCA used in KPOP-6a, KPOP-6b, KPOP-6c, KPOP-6d, and KPOP-6e (KPOP = KAUST's POP) were 0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 5 respectively, resulting in different structures of the POPs as detailed hereafter. To be mentioned that the introduction of a lower ratio of ZnCl 2 /TCA (i.e., 0.33-0.25) led to non-porous materials.…”

“…After the distillation, jumper 4 was also welded up. Compartment 5 is already the top of the cell used to measure the conductivity of the salts with the highly saturated vapor pressure (see Figure 1 in another work 14 ).…”
