“…PE in pigs is not mentioned in most veterinary textbooks. To the authors' knowledge, 9 cases of PE have been reported in pigs (Gurtl 1832, Keller 1941, Brooksbank 1958, Fredeen and Jarmoluk 1963, Karlović and Ilijaš 1977, Sharma and Parihar 1991, Freeman 1996. This short communication describes a further case of PE in a pig, and discusses the comparative and embryological implications, which could help improve the understanding of some pathogenetic aspects of PE.…”

“…In pigs, few studies have been reported on the genetic factors affecting tail shape. A putative recessive genetic defect known as kinky tail (or flexed or screw tail), derived by fused caudal vertebrae associated in some cases with other defects, has been described in the mid of the last century (Nordby, 1934;Donald, 1949;Brooksbank, 1958). It is not known if this defect could be, in some way, related or not to the normal curling of the tail that is common in domestic pigs.…”

“…Overall, international reports on PE are sporadic and characterized only by descriptions of single or few cases. In pigs, from 1832 until now, only 10 cases have been described [ 8 , 9 ]. Furthermore, no studies reported multiple cases of perosomus elumbis in consecutive births from the same parents.…”

“…Overall, scientific reports on PE are sporadic and characterized only by descriptions of single or few cases [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. In pigs, to the best of our knowledge, only 10 PE cases have been reported [ 2 , 8 , 9 ]; no familial form of this congenital defect has also been reported both in pigs and other animals. Therefore, it is considered a rare and sporadic malformation with a reduced economic impact within animal production.…”
