Congenital prepubic sinus: A variant of dorsal urethral duplication (Stephens type 3)

Abstract: A 3-year-old boy was admitted for yellowish discharge from a tiny opening in the midline prepubic area on the dorsal base of the penis. No other symptom related to the genitourinary tract was noted.Sinuousgraphy showed a non-communicating sinus tract with the urinary tract. At surgical exploration, through a diamond-shaped incision, a 4.5 cm-long sinus was found that ended blindly as a fibrous cord at the anterior surface of the pubic symphisis. Histologically, it was lined by stratified squamous epithelium an… Show more

“…CPS is a tract located at the skin overlying the symphysis pubis, superior to the base of the penis or clitoris, and extending proximally, but does not communicate with the anterior bladder wall [2, 3]. After the first report of CPS in 1987, around 50 cases have been reported in the literature so far [4].…”

“…Congenital prepubic sinus is a tract originating in the skin overlying the symphysis pubis, superior to the base of the penis or clitoris, and extending to, but not communicating with, the anterior bladder wall [3]. There are four generally proposed theories for the etiology of Congenital prepubic sinus: First anomaly of abdominal wall closure [4]; and second urethral developmental anomaly, a variant of dorsal urethral duplication [1,2,[5][6][7][8].…”

“…This congenital tract locates at the skin overlying the symphysis pubis superior to the base of the penis and ends as a fibrous non-communicating2 tract at the surface of the triad urachus–bladder–urethra. CPS rarely extends to umbilicus or has a connection with bladder or urachus that might cause infection 3.…”
