Connecting the public with clinical trial options: The ResearchMatch Trials Today tool

Abstract: Potential participants seek information about clinical trials for many reasons, but the process can be challenging. We analyzed 101,249 searches in ResearchMatch Trials Today, a free interface to recruiting trials from ClinicalTrials.gov. Searches from March 2015 to November 2016 included a broad range of conditions and healthy volunteer concepts, including 12,649 unique topics. Trials Today data indicate that it is being used to identify trials on a variety of topics.

“…Patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection with self-reported symptom severity of at least 3 on a 10-point scale (range: 1, “I feel healthy” to 10, “I was/should have been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)”) are eligible for plasma donation. Recovered patients are identified through several methods including Vanderbilt hospital records, mass email through the Vanderbilt employee list, public advertising in the community, Research-Match [ 29 , 30 ], and self-identification. Patients are able to donate plasma if they have recovered from acute COVID-19, defined as either: (1) being symptom-free for 14 days and having at least one negative COVID-19 test by RT-PCR, or (2) being symptom-free for at least 28 days.…”

“…Promotion of clinical trials increases awareness of opportunities for research participation related to an individual's personal needs. The RIC has worked to increase clinical trial awareness nationally with Trials Today, 11 a novel public-facing interface that helps patients and families search for relevant clinical trials. Launched in 2015 and partially supported by the RIC, the site resides within the ResearchMatch volunteer platform (described later) and uses ClinicalTrials.gov data.…”
