Connective Routines: How Medical Professionals Work with Safety Checklists

Abstract: New standards like checklists are introduced to establish so-called "connective professionalism," but it is difficult to work with checklists in daily circumstances. Professionals might comply with standards, but they might also neglect or resist them. By linking the sociology of professions to routine theory, we develop a relational perspective on working with standards, which is sensitive to the actual usage of standards, not so much "by" but "in-between" professionals. We analysed whether and how checklists… Show more

“…In dialectic fashion, HELPERR both relies on and enables connections between practitioners as it is used in-between them. Double stimulation through PROBE unleashes this 'connective potential' (Kuiper 2018) Implicit in much of the prior work done on preparing practitioners for shoulder dystocia is the assumption that HELPERR functions as a memory tool that practitioners access to guide appropriate, standardised actions. Program evaluations have tended to focus on individual knowledge, confidence, competence, and compliance with prescribed actions.…”

“…This was accomplished by understanding and enacting HELPERR as an auxiliary stimulus that requires fluid relational dynamics in emergent practices. This involved use of this tool being changed from an individual basis to a collective or in-between one (Kuiper 2018).…”

“…En esta línea, y particularmente en el ámbito hospitalario, Marlot Kuiper (2018) ha descrito cómo documentos de distinto tipo generan condiciones para la conectividad entre profesionales. Así, por ejemplo, estándares en la forma de checklists adquieren la posibilidad de situarse "entre" profesionales, modificando prácticas, dando lugar a nuevas configuraciones de elementos e interacciones.…”

“…Documents, which are a distinct trait of professional organization, as O’Connell has shown in another context (2011), have this power to coordinate professional practice, which have been shown in several studies (e.g. standard documents in medical practice [Kuiper, 2018]; engineering drawings in wastewater management [Van de Poel, 2008]). Conceptualizing professional documents as jurisdictionalizing tools means analysing the two processes, i.e.…”
