Conservation of European environments: The Spheciformes wasps as biodiversity indicators (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Ampulicidae, Sphecidae and Crabronidae)

Abstract: The aim of this work is to propose the use of the Spheciformes wasps (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Ampulicidae, Sphecidae and Crabronidae) as indicators of European biodiversity. One advantage of studying this group of insects lies in the regulating effects that such wasps have on other insect populations. We discuss the applicability of seven criteria, taken from the literature, to use the Spheciformes wasps as an indicator group, with respect to which parameters this group offers guarantees of being good indicators… Show more

“…Some articles discuss whole taxonomic families as indicators (e.g., Olsgard et al 2003;Gayubo et al 2005;Gulvik 2007). As species within these families differ greatly in what they indicate, it is hard to relate their indicative potential to a specific ecological or conservation issue.…”

“…Many of the articles that are specifically focused on describing biodiversity specify these purposes only vaguely or not at all (e.g., Gayubo et al 2005;Gulvik 2007). When no specific purpose was given in a paper, we assumed that the given criteria were meant to be generally valid for selecting biodiversity indicators.…”

“…Although aculeate Hymenoptera are considered to be a very useful group for assessing the quality of biotopes (e.g. Gayubo et al 2005), previous surveys of aculeate Hymenoptera in gardens of central Europe reported chiefly only important pollinators of fruit trees. Usually (and understandably), it is mainly the honeybee (Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758) and common species of bumblebees (Bombus sp.)…”

“…These wasps are associated with mankind in the field of agriculture and general ecology, acting as predators, pollinators, parasites and parasitoids. They are valuable bio indicators and biocontrol agents [4,5].The relationship of these insects with man has been unfriendly due to fear from their over rated stinging powers.…”
