Viral endogenization is a widespread phenomenon that generally results in non-functional viral elements. In parasitoid wasps, nudiviruses have been involved in three independent domestication events and play a key role in parasitism success. In Campopleginae (Ichneumonidae), endogenized ichnovirus presence is widespread, with the exception ofVenturia canescens(Ichneumonidae Campopleginae), which is known to harbour an endogenous nudivirus that enables the wasp to produce Virus-Like-Particles (VLPs). So far, in Campopleginae, the nudivirus endogenization event was an isolated case restricted toV. canescens.Using third generation sequencing technologies, microscopy and mass spectrometry, we described new cases of domesticated nudiviruses in campoplegine wasps of the genusCampoplex. We found endogenized viruses inCampoplexgenomes which belong to the Alphanudivrius genus and derive from the same endogenization event as the virus found inV. canescens,suggesting that this integration event could be much more widespread in Campopleginae than previously thought. These nudiviruses are organised in highly conserved clusters, but this organisation appears to have changed relatively to free viruses during the domestication process. We showed thatCampoplex capitatorproduces in its ovaries VLPs that are similar morphologically toV. canescensVLPs, with almost the same protein content, except for a strikingly different virulence proteins, a sign of different evolutionary paths taken to respond to distinct evolutive pressure. While ichnovirus remnants have been previously found inV. canescens, no trace of ichnovirus could be detected inCampoplexgenomes, meaning that the evolutionary history of viral integrations in Campopleginae is more complex than previously imagined.

Les virus peuvent apporter de nouvelles fonctions aux organismes qui les portent. Chez les plantes, des virus, présents à des niveaux d’infection faibles, confèrent des propriétés de résistance aux stress et aux parasites. Chez les animaux, de plus nombreux exemples d’appropriation de gènes viraux, qui participent en particulier à la protection contre de nouvelles infections, à la communication entre les neurones, ou à la morphogenèse du placenta, ont été décrits. Chez les guêpes parasites, une machinerie virale complexe est conservée sous la forme d’un virus endogène dispersé dans le génome, leur permettant d’infecter l’hôte parasité et de lui faire exprimer des protéines inhibant ses propres mécanismes de défense. Les processus d’appropriation des mêmes fonctions virales se sont souvent répétés au cours de l’évolution. Cette revue aborde des exemples de symbioses virales (c’est-à-dire, des cas où le virus exploite un organisme-hôte en lui étant par ailleurs bénéfique), où l’apport positif des virus est bien documenté.

Microorganisms are important associates of insect and arthropod species. Insect‐associated microbes, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, can drastically impact host physiology, ecology, and fitness, while many microbes still have no known role. Over the past decade, we have increased our knowledge of the taxonomic composition and functional roles of insect‐associated microbiomes and viromes. There has been a more recent shift toward examining the complexity of microbial communities, including how they vary in response to different factors (e.g., host genome, microbial strain, environment, and time), and the consequences of this variation for the host and the wider ecological community. We provide an overview of insect–microbe interactions, the variety of associated microbial functions, and the evolutionary ecology of these relationships. We explore the influence of the environment and the interactive effects of insects and their microbiomes across trophic levels. Additionally, we discuss the potential for subsequent synergistic and reciprocal impacts on the associated microbiomes, ecological interactions, and communities. Lastly, we discuss some potential avenues for the future of insect‐microbe interactions that include the modification of existing microbial symbionts as well as the construction of synthetic microbial communities.
