Constraint cascading style sheets for the Web

Abstract: Cascading Style Sheets have been introduced by the W3C as a mechanism for controlling the appearance of HTML documents. In this paper, we demonstrate how constraints provide a powerful unifying formalism for declaratively understanding and specifying style sheets for web documents. With constraints we can naturally and declaratively specify complex behaviour such as inheritance of properties and cascading of conflicting style rules. We give a detailed description of a constraint-based style sheet model, CCSS, … Show more

“…CSS notation was originally introduced by the W3C to promote a cleaner separation between document structure and appearance than HTML and provide developers greater control over web page appearance [43,1]. CSS rules are distinguished in source code by opening and closing braces (i.e., { and }) and consist of selectors, rules, and values.…”

“…These layout constraints are captured by the following 5 equalities and inequalities: (1) states that the page width, P W , is the sum of the widths of the left, middle and right gutters LG, M G, and RG, and the two columns, CW 1 and CW 2 . Constraint (2) states that the two columns have equal width; (3) states that the left and right gutters are equal and are 1/20 of the width of the columns; (4) states that the middle gutter is of fixed size (0.7 cm); (5) states that the x value of the midpoint of Figure A is at the center of the first column; (6) states that Figure B is centered in the second column; while the last equality (7) enforces that the two figures are horizontally aligned. The inequalities (8) and (9) enforce that the columns are wide enough for Figures A and B.…”
