The Qilian Shan, located in the northeastern Tibet, is under strong tectonic activity and earthquake motion due to the propagation of the plateau. At the mountain front of the eastern Qilian Shan, the Tongziba River, in the southern Zhangye Basin, flows northward and successively cuts the Minle-Damaying Fault and the Yonggu Anticline, two parallel structures within the Frontal Thrust system of the Qilian Shan. Here we present a detailed record of seven strath terraces of this river that documents the history of active deformation of the two structures. Based on the estimated crustal shortening distance from the deformed terraces and the terrace formation age constrained by AMS 14 C and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, a horizontal slip rate of 1.4 ± 0.5 mm/year of the Minle-Damaying Fault is constrained since 16.7 ± 1.8 kyr, and a shortening rate of 1.3 ± 0.4 mm/year across the Yonggu Anticline has been estimated in a similar time frame, respectively. In total, the shortening rate across the mountain front is estimated to be 2.7 ± 0.6 mm/year. GPS data show a similar modern shortening rate in this area, which indicates the rate of crustal shortening may be comparable in the modern and 10 4-year scales. Our study supports a higher crustal shortening rate along the mountain front of the eastern Qilian Shan than that of the western Qilian Shan since the Late Quaternary.

“…The Qilian Mountains are still under-going N30°E trending compression with a convergence rate of 5-7 mm yr -1 (Zhang et al, 2004;Gan et al, 2007;Zheng et al, 2013b). The deformations related to the uplift and outward growth of the Qilian Mountains are characterized by a series of northwest-trending thrust faults and fault-related folds with a 30-40 km spacing Tapponnier et al, 1990;Yin et al, 2008;Yang et al, 2007;Zuza et al, 2016;Hu et al, 2019;Cao et al, 2019). These northwest-trending thrust faults have accommodated a minimum of 250-350 km of Cenozoic crustal shortening, which equates to 40-45% shortening strain across the~400km-wide region encompassing the region from the Qaidam Basin to the Hexi Corridor (Zuza et al, 2016).…”

The geological processes responsible for outward growth of the Tibetan Plateau are debated. The Qilian Mountains on the northeastern margin of the plateau comprise one of the youngest structural components of the plateau whose understanding is key to deciphering the broader geological evolution of the region. Here, based on a reprocessed deep seismic profile which was originally collected during the 1990s across the northeast margin of the western Qilian Mountains and previous geological and geophysical data, we find evidence for decoupled crustal deformation that was partitioned by a decollement, in which lowercrustal deformation featured by local duplexing preceded upper-crustal deformation featured by imbricate thrusts. Furthermore, we propose that the Asian lithospheric mantle is being underthrust beneath the western Qilian Mountains, as inferred from patterns of lower crustal deformation which is marked by the Moho geometry. Integrating these results yields a better understanding of lithospheric deformation of western Qilian Mountains, northeastern margin of the plateau during the Cenozoic.
