Construction and Evaluation of an Educational Product: “HPV: Concept and Prevention”

Abstract: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer. In the last decade, the mortality rate due to cervical cancer has increased alarmingly in the world, especially in some countries, such as Brazil. In the eyes of science, it is absurd to admit such a fact, since this is the only cancer that has a vaccine and is highly effective, in addition to being an easily diagnosed and treatable disease in its early stages. A failure in communication related to HPV and its forms of prevention is evident. Mate… Show more

“…Based on some research on illiteracy in health, such as that carried out by Bacha, Santos, and Carvalho to assess the prior knowledge of medical students about HPV, with a percentage of correct answers of only 45.6%, this study aimed to evaluate the knowledge about HPV among first and second year medical students at university in Alagoas (Brazil), comparing the knowledge of undergraduate medical students before (first year) and after taking the course that involves knowledge on this topic (second semester of the second year) [9].…”

“…As the providers' recommendation is among the strongest predictors of successful vaccination among adolescents, better education and clarification of national guidelines for providers administering HPV vaccination are essential to optimize infection prevention and associated diseases [15]. Not only do providers have low knowledge about HPV, but it has been verified in a before-and-after clinical trial in order to assess the prior knowledge of medical students about HPV; the percentage of correct answers was 45.6% showing limited knowledge on the subject [24].…”

“…The knowledge and vaccination against HPV are low among university students, demonstrating that greater knowledge is directly associated with greater acceptance of the vaccine [15]. Too Bacha et al verified in a before-and-after clinical trial in order to assess the prior knowledge of medical students about HPV; the percentage of correct answers was 45.6% showing limited knowledge of the subject [2]. In summary, Figure 2 shows the timeline of the most significant changes that occurred in vaccination against HPV in Brazil.…”

“…It is worth mentioning that cervical cancer is a disease of slow and silent development, and may be asymptomatic in the initial phase, or with precursor lesions, and evolve after 15 to 20 years [2]. However, cervical cancer still has high incidence and mortality rates, especially in less developed countries [2].…”
