Background: Operating Rooms (ORs) are complicated environments that necessitate the improvement of OR staff's knowledge and skills to remain clinically competent and secure patient safety. The aim of this study was to assess clinical competence of OR staff in accordance with some related factors. Materials and Methods: This descriptive analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 227 OR staff in nine academic hospitals. Sampling was performed from the beginning to the end of May 2019 and the samples were selected by quota sampling. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire encompassing six dimensions of competency including general knowledge, specialized knowledge, general practical skills, specific practical skills, personality, and motivation. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and interpretive statistics. Results: The mean (SD) total score of competence was 80.99, which was optimal (11.28). The lowest score was related to the dimension of general practical skills with the mean (SD) score of 53.32 (10.26). The mean score of specialized practical skills was significantly higher in single-specialty ORs (F = 21.53, p < 0.001). Based on multiple linear regression test, it was possible to predict clinical competency through the age and work experience (R-squared = 0.96, beta = 0.31, p = 0.022). Conclusions: Specialized training has overshadowed the general practical skills that are related to the observation of basic principles of patient safety apart from surgical specialization. Strengthening of competence in general practical skills need to be prioritized in empowerment programs. We need a fixed and permanent space for the continuation of educational programs designed to promote perioperative general practical skills.

PurposeA cooperative bank customer in India has varied needs and is a unique segment of Indian banking. The purpose of the study is to provide the sector with an understanding of the needs of the cooperative bank customers in the context of improving core competencies required for the delivery of service.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopted multiple methods that included the Delphi method as well for competency identification. Appropriate factor analyses are conducted to confirm the construct validity and to determine the underlying structure of the variables chosen for the study. Stepwise multiple regression analysis is employed for data analysis.FindingsSurprisingly, emotional competency showed an insignificant relationship with customer satisfaction. The social and technical competencies are found significant. The findings suggest the incorporation of technological advancements in cooperative banks.Research limitations/implicationsThe generalization of the results is limited as the work was confined only to cooperative banks and also because of the limited sample size. The self-reported nature of competency measures also limits the accuracy of results.Practical implicationsThis work suggests that a bank has to concentrate on improving the technical competencies of the employees. The findings could also aid the bank managements in policy decisions in recruitment, selection, performance appraisal among others.Social implicationsCompetent employees could help meet the customers to satisfy their financial needs and thereby the social and economic development of the weaker section of the society could be achieved.Originality/valueConducting primary research and identification of technical competency as the major contributor to customer satisfaction are the major contributions.

Objetivo: identificar e descrever como é desenvolvida a competência relacional no cotidiano do trabalho de enfermeiros cirúrgicos e identificar em que momento/situações o enfermeiro utiliza essa competência. Método: estudo exploratório, qualitativo. O cenário foram unidades cirúrgicas pertencentes a cinco instituições hospitalares privadas de um município no Estado de Minas Gerais e a amostra composta por 43 enfermeiros atuantes destas unidades. Foi realizada a técnica de grupo focal em 2018 e os dados foram interpretados pela análise temática indutiva. Resultados: evidenciou-se que a competência relacional se dá por meio do desenvolvimento de capacidades a serem adquiridas pelos enfermeiros, tais como o gerenciamento de conflitos, comunicação assertiva, gestão de pessoas por meio do dimensionamento de pessoal e inteligência emocional. Conclusão: O ambiente cirúrgico demanda atividades que potencializam o desgaste físico e emocional do enfermeiro com demais membros da equipe de saúde, o que torna imprescindível o aprimoramento de capacidades/aptidões associadas a competência relacional.
