Constructive or Optimized: An Overview of Strategies to Design Networks for Time-Critical Applications

Abstract: Distributed systems are pervasive nowadays, being found in different areas, from smart toys to smart factories. As the usage of such systems increases, so does their complexity and design. Therefore, this work aims to overview the methods for designing networks that accommodate time-constrained distributed applications. The work starts with a history of time-aware Ethernet-based protocols. Then, it continues with an overview of the design strategies from the literature. For each research paper, there… Show more

“…Some of the main types are: Relaxation metaheuristics [93] refer to problem-solving procedures that use relaxations of the original model (that is, modifications of the model that make the problem easier to solve), the solution of which facilitates the solution of the original problem. The constructive metaheuristics [94] are oriented to the procedures that try to obtain a solution from the analysis and gradual selection of the components that form it. Search metaheuristics [95] guide procedures that use transformations or moves to traverse the space of alternative solutions and exploit the associated environment structures.…”

“…There has been a lot of work on the analysis and configuration of TSN networks. For surveys, the reader is directed to [20], [21]. The problem of finding the routes for AVB flows over TSN-based networks has been addressed in [22].…”

“…The configuration issues of TAS (IEEE 802.1Qbv), e.g., related to the routing and synthesis of GCLs, have been extensively studied in the literature [20], [21]. For example, the problem of scheduling TT traffic has been first addressed by [25] using Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT).…”

“…Unlike the hardware functionality, routing and scheduling solutions have been left out of TSN standards. The configuration issues of the time-aware shaper (TAS) have been extensively studied in the literature [5][6][7][8], while the time cost will be unacceptable with the large network size and traffic scale. Hence, the asynchronous mechanism credit-based shaper (CBS) defined in IEEE 802.1BA [9] is introduced to prevent the starvation of class B traffic.…”
