Contact Calls Facilitate Group Contraction in Free-Ranging Goats (Capra aegagrus hircus)

Abstract: Many social animal species produce vocalizations believed to facilitate group contraction when one or more group members have become distant. However, the mechanisms underlying this function remain unclear for many species. We examined this question with data on a semi-free ranging group of 16 adult domesticated goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) inhabiting Tsaobis Nature Park, Namibia. All goats wore dataloggers consisting of a GPS and audio recorder for 5-6 h per day for 10 days, providing continuous data on thei… Show more

“…Acoustic signals communicate that animals are “in need” of something, and vocalization is used to call for herd members [ 44 ], or to facilitate group contraction in goats [ 45 ], and thus has been used as a measure of acute distress in goat kids [ 46 , 47 ]. Hence, increased vocalization in goats during social isolation can be interpreted as a sign of fear or distress, and an adaptive attempt to communicate with flock mates.…”

“…In addition, the effect team processes have on the progression of team outcomes in coordinate space could be examined by linking changes in the outcome's trajectory to features of team processes, such as the timing or intensity of communication behaviors. This approach is comparable to how the occurrences of vocalizations have been linked to changes in animal movement trajectories (Gall and Manser 2017;O'Bryan et al 2019).…”

“…Progress in this area has been aided by new technological advances in data collection that enable the acquisition of precise spatiotemporal data on the behavior of many group members. Some examples of this technology include software that can characterize individual trajectories (Moussaïd et al 2010;Herbert-Read et al 2011) or poses (Graving et al 2019a) from video data and tracking devices that monitor the behavior, relative positions, and/or vocalizations of free-ranging animals (King et al 2012;O'Bryan et al 2019;King et al 2018;Fehlmann and King 2016).…”

“…Goats are highly gregarious and make collective decisions about the nature and timing of their activities [ 29 , 30 ]. Preliminary observations of goat behaviour at the study site indicated the goats move and forage through a highly patchy (dry) riverbed, without observable consistencies in foraging patch choice.…”
