Sponges are potent filter feeders and as such are exposed to high fluxes of toxic trace elements, which can accumulate in their body over time. Such is the case of the Red Sea sponge Theonella swinhoei, which has been shown to accumulate up to 8500 mg/Kg of the highly toxicelement arsenic. T. swinhoei is known to harbor a multitude of sponge-associated bacteria, so it is hypothesized that the associated-bacteria will be tolerant to high arsenic concentration. This study also investigates the fate of the arsenic accumulated in the sponge to test if the associated-bacteria have an important role in the arsenic accumulation process of their host, since bacteria are key players in the natural arsenic cycle. Separation of the sponge to sponge cells and bacteria enriched fractions showed that arsenic is accumulated by the bacteria. Sponge-associated, arsenic-tolerant bacteria were cultured in the presence of 5 mM of either arsenate or arsenite (equivalent to 6150 mg/Kg arsenic, dry weight). The 54 isolated bacteria were grouped to 15 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and isolates belonging to 12 OTUs were assessed for tolerance to arsenate at increased concentrations up to 100 mM. Eight of the 12 OTUs tolerated an order of magnitude increase in the concentration of arsenate, and some exhibited external biomineralization of arsenic–magnesium salts. The biomineralization of this unique mineral was directly observed in bacteria for the first time. These results may provide an explanation for the ability of the sponge to accumulate considerable amounts of arsenic. Furthermore arsenic-mineralizing bacteria can potentially be used for the study of bioremediation, as arsenic toxicity affects millions of people worldwide.

A new synthesis method of hybrid Fe3O4/C/TiO2 structures was developed using microwave-assisted coprecipitation. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of the addition of glucose and titanium dioxide on adsorptive properties enabling removal of arsenic ions from the solution. The study involved the synthesis of pure magnetite, magnetite modified with glucose and magnetite modified with glucose and titanium dioxide in magnetite: glucose: titanium dioxide molar ratio 1:0.2:3. Materials were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, and BET methods. Magnetite and titanium dioxide nanoparticles were below 20 nm in size in obtained structures. The specific surface area of pure magnetite was approximately 79 m2/g while that of magnetite modified with titanium dioxide was above 190 m2/g. Obtained materials were examined as adsorbents used for removal As(V) ions from aqueous solutions. Adsorption of arsenic ions by pure magnetite and magnetite modified with titanium dioxide was very high, above 90% (initial concentration 10 mg/L), pH in the range from 2 to 7. The preparation of magnetic adsorbents with a high adsorption capacity of As(V) ions was developed (in the range from 19.34 to 11.83 mg/g). Magnetic properties enable the easy separation of an adsorbent from a solution, following adsorption.

Arsenic (As) is a potent environmental toxicant and chronic exposure to it results in various malignancies in humans. Oxidative stress has been implicated in the etiopathogenesis of As-induced toxicity. This investigated the protective effect of plant antioxidant 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (DHB) on sodium meta-arsenite (SA), an As-(III) compound, induced oxidative damage in human red blood cells (RBC). The RBC were first incubated with different concentrations of DHB and then treated with SA at 37°C. Hemolysates were prepared and assayed for various biochemical parameters. Treatment of RBC with SA alone enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species and increased lipid and protein oxidation. Reduced glutathione levels, total sulfhydryl content and cellular antioxidant power were significantly decreased in SA alone treated RBC, compared to the untreated control cells. This was accompanied by membrane damage, alterations in activities of antioxidant enzymes and deranged glucose metabolism. Incubation of RBC with DHB, prior to treatment with SA, significantly and dose-dependently attenuated the SA-induced changes in all these parameters. Scanning electron microscopy of RBC confirmed these biochemical results. Treatment of RBC with SA alone converted the biconcave discoids to echinocytes but the presence of DHB inhibited this conversion and the RBC retained their normal shape. These results show that DHB protects human RBC from SA-induced oxidative damage, most probably due to its antioxidant character.
