Contemporary Classification of Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Receptor Agonists (GLP1RAs)

Abstract: This communication provides a contemporary classification of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP1RAs) based on indication, route, and frequency of administration, which could support a person-centric approach to treatment choice. It includes all recently developed GLP1RAs as well as those in advanced stages of clinical study. Keeping pace with current trends in pharmacology and metabolic medicine, it attempts to bring clarity and simplicity to a complex spread of information.

“…More evidence is needed, however, regarding the impact of oral semaglutide on absorption of alcohol and other drugs and in those with diabetic gastroparesis. This commentary, based on the expert opinion of the authors and suggestions mentioned in other peer-reviewed published papers [ 14 ], shares clinical tips on how to use the drug, in a safe and smart manner, in a wider spectrum of people living with type 2 diabetes. This will ensure rational use of this molecule in a safer and more effective method.…”

“…Hence, several modifications of this peptide have been attempted with great success in order to establish clinically useful drugs. Two types of GLP1RA are used in the treatment of diabetes and its complications: exendin-based derivatives and human GLP1 analogues [ 83 ]. Exenatide, a synthetic analogue of exendin-4, the natural GLP1RA, is the first peptide approved for the treatment of diabetes [ 84 , 85 ].…”
