Content-aware resource allocation and packet scheduling for video transmission over wireless networks

Abstract: A cross-layer packet scheduling scheme that streams pre-encoded video over wireless downlink packet access networks to multiple users is presented. The scheme can be used with the emerging wireless standards such as HSDPA and IEEE 802.16. A gradient based scheduling scheme is used in which user data rates are dynamically adjusted based on channel quality as well as the gradients of a utility function. The user utilities are designed as a function of the distortion of the received video. This enables distortion… Show more

“…As one of the 'killer'-applications in contemporary wireless communications systems [154]- [156], video streaming has become a popular research topic, including efficient compression standards [157]- [159], error-concealment/error-resilient streaming techniques [155], [160], [161], as well as reliable transmission schemes [162]- [164], etc.…”

“…A playout adaptive packet scheduling algorithm is proposed in [16] for video delivery over wireless networks. A cross layer video packet scheduling scheme is presented in [17], which targets downlink transmission. In [18], a Markov decision process is used to formulate the video packet scheduling problem and balance the packet distortion impact with the consumed energy.…”

“…Recent advances in wireless optimization are attracting researchers and industry to study cross-layer issues for future networks (Chen et al, 2007). Other cross-layer implementations supporting QoS in wireless system, as well as, load balance techniques can be found in (Pahalawatta et al, 2007), (Wu et al, 2007) and (Villalon et al, 2007). It is clear that the cross-layer schemes will be predominant in WMNs, where new quality level mechanisms will be designed and implemented to increase the satisfaction of costumers and optimize the usage of network resources, such as routing protocols.…”
