The growing literature on the gendering of citizenship and citizenship education highlights that western notions of 'citizenship' have often been framed in a way that implicitly excludes women. At the same time, insofar as feminist writers have addressed citizenship, they have tended to see it in largely local and national terms. While feminist literature has laid the groundwork for understanding how schools have shaped and structured a gendered citizenry, there is a lack of large-scale quantitative data which might allow us to explore the intersection between gender and global citizenship education. Drawing on a large-scale quantitative study on development education/ global citizenship education in second-level schools, the data presented here suggests that emergent notions of global citizenship are being gendered in schools. The data suggests that single-sex girls' school are more likely than other types of school to emphasise a sense of responsibility for, and an analysis of, global inequalities, while differences also emerge between boys' schools and co-educational schools.

RESUMENEstudios recientes muestran que el periodo de crisis económica ha representado una ventana de oportunidad para cuestionar las políticas de género. Este artículo analiza las actuaciones en materia de salud sexual y reproductiva en España para explorar la naturaleza y alcance de los retrocesos experimentados. A través de un análisis multinivel que comprende las principales actuaciones nacionales y autonómicas, identifica la introducción de un nuevo marco interpretativo que gira en torno a la 'protección de la vida'. Además, analiza el papel de los actores que impulsan dicho cambio en la normativa y, a través de un estudio pormenorizado del caso gallego, explora sus consecuencias en la fase de implementación de las políticas. Con ello, contribuye a arrojar luz sobre las transformaciones en el contenido de las políticas más recientes y sobre la irrupción de nuevos actores en el sub-sistema de las políticas de género.Palabras clave: Políticas de igualdad, España, comunidades autónomas, salud sexual y reproductiva, maternidad. This article aims to contribute to current debates about international migration and the restructuring of the Welfare state in Europe, by highlighting the specificities of the French context. It draws on ethnographic research about the training of unemployed migrant women as domestic workers in Paris to address the ambiguities that underlie the enterprise of professionalizing domestic service. The qualitative data presented in the article show how essentialist ideologies operate within training practices of domestic workers. They reveal that the training practices challenge the association of the job with domesticity, but fail to acknowledge the racist organization of domestic service. Hence, they endorse essentialist constructions of cultural difference. Training practices are also consistent with current neoliberal policies and discourses on unemployment and ‘employability’, as they are framed by the normative reference to an entrepreneurial model of society. Finally, the data suggest that migrant women's experience of domestic service as a prospective job and their scepticism about the enterprise of professionalizing radically differ from the instructors’ views.
