Continuous, Alternating, and Mixed Insecticides Affect Development of Resistance in the Horn Fly (Diptera: Muscidae)

Abstract: Susceptible populations of horn flies, Haematobia irritans (L.), were selected with six insecticide treatment regimens: continuous use of permethrin, diazinon, or ivermectin; permethrin/diazinon (1:2) mixture; permethrin-diazinon rotation; and permethrin-ivermectin rotation. Insecticide selection was applied as low-volume sprays on steers infested with horn flies housed in environmentally controlled rooms. During the study period, horn fly populations developed an apparent resistance to all insecticide treatme… Show more

“…Various concentrations of permethrin were generated in acetone through serial Brazil (Barros et al, 2002;Guerrero & Barros, 2006). Various resistance mitigation strategies, such as insecticide mixtures, synergists, or rotation with different classes of insecticides have been attempted to resolve problems of resistance to pyrethroids in horn flies (Byford et al, 1987;Sparks & Byford, 1988;Mckenzie & Byford, 1993;Guglielmone et al, 1999;Oremus et al, 2006).…”

“…The feasibility of using two insecticides in rotation, mixture, or sequentially for résistance management has been examined in several laboratories by means of cage experiments (Cilek and Knapp 1993;Curtis et al 1993;Georghiou et al 1983;McKenzie and Byford 1993). As expected, the use of différent insecticides and différent species of insects has led to divergent conclusions.…”

“…In order to slow development of resistance, biennial or triennial alternation of pyrethroids and organophosphates or use of insecticide mixtures has been proposed. This approach is supported by observations that cross-resistance does not develop between pyrethroids and organophosphates (Sheppard and Joyce 1992) and that sensitivity to organophosphates, such as diazinon, may increase as resistance develops to pyrethroids (Mckenzie and Byford 1993).…”
