Continuous green biocatalytic processes using ionic liquids and supercritical carbon dioxide

Abstract: Soluble Candida antarctica lipase B dissolved in ionic liquids showed good synthetic activity, enantioselectivity and operational stability in supercritical carbon dioxide for both butyl butyrate synthesis and the kinetic resolution of 1-phenylethanol processes by transesterification.

“…CALB was suspended in IL on two different supports and was used in 4 h reaction-extraction cycles with scCO 2 as non-reactive phase and stored for 20 h at room temperature (Lozano et al 2002). The synthesis of butyl butyrate from vinyl butyrate and 1-butanol was most successful using [BMIM][NTF 2 ].…”

“…They stated that the recovery of >99.99 mol % was obtained at optimized conditions of 35˝C and 11 MPa. Lozano et al [102] N]/SC-CO 2 systems for the transesterification of vinyl butyratewith 1-butanol and the kinetic resolution of rac-1-phenylethanol with vinyl propionate by CALB. In both systems, the enantiomeric excess of the recovered product fraction (ee p ) was above 99.9% for continuous (R)-1-phenylethyl propionate synthesis at 100˝C and 15 MPa, and the enzyme showed excellent activity and stability.…”

“…Applying enzymes in SC CO 2 /ILs biphasic systems has a very short history. The first successful biotransformation in SC CO 2 /ILs biphasic systems was reported in the year 2002 (Lozano et al, 2002). The protective effect of ILs towards enzyme deactivation by temperature or CO 2 was demonstrated by the observed increase in synthetic activity of the enzyme when it was assayed in the presence of IL.…”
