Continuous production of indole-3-acetic acid by immobilized cells of Arthrobacter agilis

Abstract: Indole acetic acid (IAA) is a plant growth-promoting hormone used in agriculture; therefore, its continuous production is of paramount importance. IAA-producing eight bacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere of Verbascum vulcanicum. Among them, Arthrobacter agilis A17 gave maximum IAA production (75 mg/L) and this strain was used to immobilization studies. The A. agilis A17 cells were immobilized in calcium alginate for the production of IAA. Optimization of process parameters for IAA production was carried… Show more

“…IAA application promotes both root and shoot development and elongation, directs and controls cell division, expansion, differentiation, regulates enzyme activity and gene expression [2,3]. Thus, microbes that produce IAA could have value as biofertilizers [4]. Such studies are in progress to develop IAA-producing microbes to promote plant growth and protect sustainable agriculture [3].…”

“…The synthesized chemicals were dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, 80%) at a final concentration of 10 mg/mL. Antimicrobial activities of the synthesized chemicals were tested by disc diffusion method against Bacillus cereus BC-On [36], Arthrobacter agilis A17 [37], Pseudomonas aeruginosa OG1 [38], Xanthomonas campestris MO-03 [39], Candida albicans, Klebsiella oxytoca (clinical isolates), and Helicobacter pylori [40] (ATCC 43629). For this purpose, a suspension of the tested microorganism (0.1 mL of 10 8 cells per mL) was spread on the agar plates.…”

“…4). Different workers have optimized IAA production by different carbon sources as well as their combinations, eg., mannitol in B. subtilis WR-W2 [33], Arthrobacter agilis [6], sucrose in Acetobacter diazotrophicus L1 [35], mannitol and galactose [48] and mannitol and L-glutamic acid [49].…”

“…IAA acts as an important signal molecule in the regulation of plant development by initiation, cell division and cell enlargement [4]. The amino acid L-tryptophan, serves as a physiological precursor for biosynthesis of auxins in microbes and plants [5], [6]. Bacteria synthesize auxins to perturb host physiological processes for their own benefit by altering the auxin pool, depending upon the amount of IAA produced.…”
