Continuous vertical aerosol profiling with a multi-wavelength Raman polarization lidar over the Pearl River Delta, China

Abstract: Abstract. A dataset of particle optical properties of the highly polluted atmosphere over the Pearl River Delta (PRD), Guangzhou, China, is presented in this paper. The data were derived from the measurements of a multi-wavelength Raman and depolarization lidar PollyXT and a co-located AERONET sun photometer. The measurement campaign was conducted from November 2011 to mid-June 2012. These are the first Raman lidar measurements in the PRD that lasted for several months. A mean value of aerosol optical depth (… Show more

“…The highest values, above 70 sr, appear during summer, while the minimum lidar ratio is observed in the PBL during spring. It is close to the respective continental lidar ratio and also within the range that Heese et al (2017) report for pollution particles. Consequently, it is quite possible that the biomass layers affect the boundary layer less during spring, if at all.…”

“…The minimum values are observed at 0.9 during autumn in the PBL. According to Heese et al (2017), lower Ångström values are more typical of pollution mixtures rather than of pure pollution. Giannakaki et al (2010) report an annual mean value of 1.4 ± 1.0 for the continental polluted aerosol.…”

“…It is controlled by a subtropical monsoon climate characterized by warm winters and hot and humid summers. The annual precipitation is 1600-1900 mm, with rainy season lasting from April to September [84]. The PM 2.5 pollution in PRD is heaviest during winter, followed by spring and autumn, and summer is the cleanest season [21,85].…”
