“…In an attempt to identify potential vectors of O. lupi in Xanthi, Greece, a rural area endemic for this parasite, three blackfly species ( Simulium velutinum , Simulium reptans and Simulium pseudequinum ) were collected and allowed to feed on two O. lupi infested dogs, but no developing larvae were detected in the dissected blackflies after 21 days (Otranto et al , 2012b). Some 18 blackfly species have been reported from the northern part of Iran; eight of them, including Simulium ( Eusimulium ) brachyantherum , S. ( Montisimulium ) assadovi , S. ( Nevermannia ) brevitarse , S. ( Obuchovia ) transcaspicum , S. ( Simulium ) bezzii , S. ( Simulium ) fontanum and S. ( Simulium ) variegatum , are from mountainous or hilly areas of Alborz in the north of Tehran Province (Crosskey, 2002; Yankovsky, 2010), the nearest place with abundant potential vectors to Qom. Residents of Qom and Tehran usually commute between these two cities and commonly do not define this as travel.…”

“…The distribution area of both species appears to partly overlap in Transcaucasia and in the eastern Balkans. However, the presence of S. degrangei in Transcaucasia is based on Simulium sastscheri Machavariani, 1966, recently synonymised with it (Yankovsky 2003), and the occurrence of S. bukovskii in the Balkan areas of Romania and Bulgaria is based on less reliable data (Dinulescu 1966;Kovachev 1979). The last species from this group, Simulium (Simulium) vigintifile Dinulescu, 1966 is known only from the original description from Romania and it has not been recorded elsewhere since (Jedlička et al 2004).…”

“…Our tree shows the ancient mtDNA divergence of S. paraequinum , which could be interpreted as the existence of two taxa (possibly matching with paraequinum and transcaucasicum , per Rubtsov). As we did not have samples from Iran of the species Simulium lurestanicum (Yankovsky, 2010) that are thought to be a synonym of S. paraequinum by Khazeni et al (2013), we could not suggest the identity nor the position of that taxon.…”
