Contributions of Nature-Based Solutions to Reduce Peoples’ Vulnerabilities to Climate Change across the Rural Global South

Abstract: Nature-based solutions (NbS) —i.e. working with and enhancing nature to address societal challenges— feature with increasing prominence in responses to climate change, including in the adaptation plans of the most vulnerable nations. Although evidence for the effectiveness of NbS for adaptation is growing, there is less evidence on whether and how NbS reduce vulnerability to climate change in the Global South, despite this region being home to most of the world’s most climate-vuln… Show more

“…For example, urban expansion and associated destruction of natural landscapes and carbon sinks could be mitigated through NbS such as urban forestry, urban gardening, and horticulture (Specht et al, 2015;Opitz et al, 2016). More recently, there have been discussions of frameworks, typologies, performance assessments, limits, and implementation of NbS (Seddon et al 2020;Kumar et al 2021;Midgley et al 2021;de Oliveira et al 2021;Woroniecki et al 2021).…”

“…NbS are fundamentally a social-ecological system, where local human communities are inseparable from the ecological elements (Seddon et al, 2020a;Woroniecki et al, 2021;Turner et al, 2022). Here we focus on the links between NbS and their ecological outcomes.…”
