Contributions to the Nearby Stars (NStars) Project: Spectroscopy of Stars Earlier than M0 within 40 Parsecs: The Northern Sample. I.

Abstract: We have embarked on a project, under the aegis of the Nearby Stars (NStars)/ Space Interferometry Mission Preparatory Science Program to obtain spectra, spectral types, and, where feasible, basic physical parameters for the 3600 dwarf and giant stars earlier than M0 within 40 parsecs of the sun. In this paper we report on the results of this project for the first 664 stars in the northern hemisphere. These results include precise, homogeneous spectral types, basic physical parameters (including the effective t… Show more

“…14 Aur C is located 14.6 arcsec from A, at a distance of 104 ± 32 pc from the Sun (van Leeuwen 2007). Spectral types F2V+DA (Vennes et al 1998) or F5V (Gray et al 2003) have been proposed. It appears to be a fast rotator.…”

“…We assume a measurement error of 5% in the case of LOPeg since Gray et al (2003) do not report one. Nine objects have no available ¢ R log HK index but have a measurement for the alternative S HK index that also traces chromospheric activity.…”

“…In a few cases where the B−V color of a target is redder than the color range where the relation has been tested (0.45 B−V 1.5), we display the value between parentheses in Table 1. We use the classification of Gray et al (2003) …”

“…Star catalogues have been developed for space telescopes which provide a systematic foundation for searching out potential targets in the near galactic neighbourhood (see e.g. Gray et al 2003;Turnbull and Tarter 2003;Brown 2006;Porto de Mello et al 2006;Kaltenegger et al 2009). In preparation for such searches it is important to identify the types of planetary bodies on which photosynthesis might occur beyond the familiar paradigm of solar-driven photosynthesis on a planet such as the Earth.…”
