“…A field study on human clonorchiasis observed persistent sonographic evidence of dilatation of intrahepatic bile ducts for 2 years after cure in half of the subjected population (Hong et al, 1998). The study presented that the sonography showed some false negative as well as many false positive cases.…”

“…Sonographic detection of the bile ducts infected by only a few worms may be more difficult in human than in rabbits because the human liver is much larger than that of rabbits. In this context, the false negative cases by sonography of Hong et al (1998) can be explained as that most of them might have been lightly infected as EPG less than 100, which is estimated less than 5 flukes. Practically it is quite plausible that most of the lightly infected cases with one or two worms may be missed by sonography.…”

“…However, the recommended dosage of PZQ is not completely effective, with the cure rate of 83-85% in clonorchiasis (Rim et al, 1981;Seo et al, 1983). Control of clonorchiasis by PZQ treatment was tried in the field, but the result was incomplete in spite of repeated treatments (Hong et al, 1998).…”

“…In Korea a single dose of 40 mg/kg PZQ had been applied for mass clonorchiasis control, and this achieved a 25.0% cure rate and an egg reduction rate of 95.5% (Lee, 1984). However, in clonorchiasis control trials, actual cure rate is not as high as expected due to poor compliance with the three dose regimen (Hong et al, 1998(Hong et al, , 2001). In our phase 2 clinical trial, the cure rate achieved using a single dose of 30 mg/kg SRP was unsatisfactory.…”
