Control of glass surface wettability via esterification with n-alkyl alcohols

Abstract: Surface wettability plays an essential role in many processes and materials applications. It depends mainly on the surface roughness and chemical composition, thus through a controlled modification of these parameters, the wettability can be restrained. Glass is an inorganic solid material, composed mainly of amorphous silica, which surface, due to the presence of reactive hydroxyl groups, can be quite easily chemically modified. This feature can be used to control the wettability of glass by reaction with org… Show more

“…S8, ESI †). [53][54][55][56][57][58] The ratio between polar and dispersive components for the stainless steel and glass substrates are rather similar, with the greatest difference between these two substrates being the total net surface energy value. As such, the significant difference in total net surface energy suffices in driving phase segregation, not the specifics of polar vs dispersive character.…”

“…It should be noted that quaternisation of nanocellulose introduces NH4 + , which is one of the Lewis acids. Chitosan (film A) showed strong cationic character as it was dissolved in acidic solution, which led to protonation of the amino groups, and protons are known to be a good Lewis acid [58].…”
