Control of Sosnovsky’s hogweed (Heracleum sosnowskyi Manden.) in forests using herbicides

Abstract: The article presents the results of field experiments carried out in the Leningrad Region in 2018 and 2019 with the aim to test the effectiveness of modern herbicides against Sosnowsky’s hogweed and other undesirable herbaceous plants in various types of forest lands: in a clear cutting, spruce plantation, hayfield and on the side of a forest road. The herbicides Magnum (water dispersed granules, 600 g/kg of metsulfuron-methyl), Ancor-85 (water dispersed granules, 750 g/kg of potassium salt of sulfometuron-met… Show more

“…The spatial scale of the removed invasion was taken into account [78], as well as the remarkable ability to rapidly regenerate the population [79] and the need to evaluate the results after removal [80][81][82]. The published methods used to remove the Caucasian hogweeds invasion were diverse and included sheep grazing [83,84], mowing [85], and herbicides [86,87], but also chemical substances, for example, pyrolysis liquids [88] and others [89]. The costs and difficulties of the labor and financial resources required to remove Caucasian hogweeds invasion quickly became so great that there were prepared cost-effectiveness studies [90][91][92], as well as studies verifying theoretical preparation to eradicate this invasion [93].…”
