“…In acute rejection intravenous bolus methylprednisolone 500-1000 mg was given daily for one to three days, and the dose of oral prednisone was then gradually tapered to the prerejection dose. As part of a clinical trial antilymphocyte globulin was used in alternate patients from September 1968, and it was used in all patients from 1972.11 12 From 1967 to 1969 blood transfusions were used liberally in our dialysis protocols, but after 1969 they were withheld before transplantation unless strong clinical indications existed. A deliberate pretransplant blood transfusion programme was not started until September 1980.…”

“…No influence on patient survival was observed (57, 103,104). Prospective studies will, however, have to decide about the real value of A L G treatment in allotransplantation.…”

“…Antilymphocyte globulin has been used very widely with variaible effect. In a controlled clinical trial Sheil et al 4 showed that a course of antilymphocyte globulin lasting a few weeks can improve overall graft survival by about 10-15%. Patients receiving antilymphocyte globulin are, however, very prone to develop fungal infections, and deaths from this cause have tended to cancel out the benefits from controlling rejection.56…”
