Magnetic composite nanomaterials consisting of more than two functional constituents have been attracting much research interests due to the realization of multiple functionalities in a single entity. In particular, integration of ferromagnetic oxides and noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) in composites results in simultaneous magnetic activity and optical response where the optical property of the whole system could be modulated by application of an external magnetic field. In this work, we prepared Ag NPs-coated Fe 3 O 4 microspheres as a novel surfactant-free surfaceenhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate through a solid-phase thermal decomposition reaction. The SERS sensitivity of the fabricated nanocomposites is maximized by adjusting the size and density of Ag NPs supported on the Fe 3 O 4 microspheres and further increased by magneticfield-directed self-assembly of the composite substrates, with both effects attributed to the efficient generation of plasmonic near-field "hot" spots. At the optimal conditions, the prepared substrate is capable of detecting rhodamine 6G molecules at a concentration down to 10 À12 M, thus demonstrating the great potential of using bifunctional nanocomposites as an excellent candidate for ultra-high sensitive Raman spectroscopy and biosensors. The FeCo/Fe3O4 nanocomposite was synthesized using the hydrothermal approach, in which the FeCo alloy and Fe3O4 are formed by one step. The structure of the FeCo/Fe3O4 nanocomposite was characterized by means of Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray energy-dispersive spectrometer spectroscopy (EDX). They show that the mass ratio of FeCo/Fe3O4 strongly depends on the reaction temperature. Such various architectures follow a stepwise growth mechanism of the composites prepared in various reaction temperatures were also discussed. It indicates that this strategy is facile, effective and controllable for the synthesis of FeCo/Fe3O4 by the one-step method. Furthermore, the magnetic and wave-absorbing properties of the nanocomposites with various structures were investigated in detail. The results show that the FeCo/Fe3O4 with higher mass ratio has higher magnetic properties. Moreover, the FeCo/Fe3O4 nanocomposite shows high wave-absorbing properties (e.g., −37.9 dB), which are expected to apply in microwave absorbing materials.

Magnetic core-shell nanoparticles of type Fe 3 O 4 @Ag were synthesized in gram scale following a combined co-precipitation phase-transfer method and afterwards, processed to nanoparticle polymer (polypropylene and polyamide) composites. These composites were used as sheath material for the fabrication of core-sheath fibers. During the melt spinning process, a magnetic field was applied around the roving, whereby the particles move in the still liquid sheath polymer towards the surface. The produced fiber materials were investigated by AFM showing a nanostructuring of the surface, which was indirectly confirmed by determination of a slight surface tension lowering. Nanoparticle movement was shown by cross-section SEM and EDX measurements. The antibacterial activity of the spun fibers was proven by contacting them with Escherichia coli. A long-term stability of this effect was observable by carrying out a standard washability test. In contrast to previous works this new approach uses no deposition technique to introduce surface changes. It rather applies a magnetic force to move appropriately equipped nanoparticles from the inside of the fiber to the surface. This leads in only one step to a strong superficial anchoring of the particles resulting in a unique combination of long-term stable antibacterial and improved anti-soiling effects.
