Conventional papillary thyroid carcinoma: effects of cystic changes visible on ultrasonography on disease prognosis

Abstract: PurposeTo investigate the characteristics of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with cystic changes visible on ultrasonography (US).MethodsThis study included 553 PTCs in 553 patients between January 2003 and August 2004. One radiologist with 10 years of experience in thyroid imaging retrospectively reviewed the preoperative US images. Two different groups were formed according to two different reference points (group 1, 25%; group 2, 50%) of the cystic component. Patients between the groups were compared accor… Show more

“…Prophylactic central lymph node dissection was routinely performed at the time of total thyroidectomy for all included patients. (26,27). However, the association between preoperative US features and recurrence of classic PTC was the primary concern of the present study, and none of these concepts were documented in the previous studies (26,27).…”

“…In the present study marked hypoechogenicity was rare among nodules in category 3a, indicating that this sign has an extremely low probability of appearing in thyroid nodules if other signs of malignancy are absent. Because cystic papillary thyroid cancer is extremely rare 19 and solid benign thyroid nodules are extremely common, a solid nodule cannot become a sign to assess benign and malignant nodules. Because color Doppler ultrasonography has no clear indicator for discriminating benign and malignant nodules 20 22 and because ultrasound elastography technology is immature 23,24 , these 2 modes were not used to examine the thyroid nodules included in the present study.…”

“…There have been plenty of studies concerning the US features of patients with PTC [15][16][17][18]. According to our knowledge, no reports have been published to date that evaluate the preoperative US features of patients with TT-UMP.…”
