Convergence of digital humanities and digital libraries

Abstract: Purpose – Digital humanities (DH) has become a much discussed topic among both humanities scholars and library professionals. “…DH are a "making" culture and libraries can encourage the creation of creative digital products and projects. Digital humanities allow libraries to be better at aligning support services and infrastructure with humanities specialists' new research and communication behaviours; they can serve as an agent of change within the library (Rockenbach, 2013) Zhang, Liu, andMathews (2015) conclude that DH communities and digital libraries share common challenges and tasks. Along these lines, Koltay (2016) talks about epistemologies and interests that are shared between DH and LIS, and he refers to the two disciplines' functions associated with the academic use of written/recorded information.…”

“…However, it is hoped that the archive will also create awareness of the value of these ephemeral items within the specific community that it aims to service and record. The WANMA project presents an opportunity for the convergence of digital humanities theory and digital library practice, as identified by Siemens, Cunningham, Duff, and Warwick (2011) and Zhang, Liu, and Mathews (2015), resulting in an archive that, it is hoped, will prove to be a useful, adaptable and relevant tool for music research broadly, and specifically for the community that it seeks to recognise and represent. However, in order for analysis of the archive's contents to take place, the art form around which WANMA is focused must be defined.…”

“…In this instance, a tangible community of practice that has enabled the creation of numerous creative works is thusly translated into the digital. This WANMA digitisation project has hinged upon the convergence of digital humanities theory and digital library practice, as identified by Siemens et al (2011), and Zhang et al (2015).…”

“…Librarians are no longer confined to conventional library functions such as cataloguing and classification of books, rather they expand their responsibilities aligned with global electronic and educational revolution. Zhang, Liu and Mathews (2015) argue that librarians' roles are more proactive and hybrid in the digital age. They continue that "libraries should demonstrate higher efficiency and effectiveness in the services by revamping organizational culture or structure to stimulate and realize more and deeper cross-boundary conversations and collaborations."…”
