Conversion of Pinus nigra Plantations with Natural Regeneration in the Slovenian Karst: The Importance of Intermediate, Gradually Formed Canopy Gaps

Abstract: Since the mid-19th century, Pinus nigra plantations have played a key role in the restoration of degraded European landscapes. Nowadays, these plantations are aging and prone to natural disturbances, insect infestations, and diseases. For their successful gradual conversion, knowledge of optimal gap spatiotemporal dynamics is crucial. We studied herb and natural regeneration patterns along with site factors on 477 subplots within 44 plots distributed over four stand types: closed stand (14% diffuse light), ope… Show more

“…Eleven articles are devoted to the study of forest ecosystems (Table 2). Research was conducted on old-growth mesic broad-leaved forest [63][64][65], beech forests [66], Pinus nigra plantations [67], mixed mountain forests composed of Picea abies, Abies alba and Fagus sylvatica [68], old-growth spruce-fir forests [69] and others.…”

“…The studies of climatedriven dynamics for various types of vegetation deserve special attention [66,76,83,84]. Scientists considered the recovery dynamics for the alpine mountain bog [73], bare slopes [79], forests [64,67,68,85] and grasslands [86]. Climatic, soil, plant and anthropogenic factors were assessed for grasslands [53,60,61].…”

“…Throughout the Mediterranean region, overexploitation and depletion of forest resources have had a profound impact on the ecosystems (Vogiatzakis et al 2006). The basic principles of NBFM are also appropriate for Mediterranean forests and there are many examples of uneven-aged management (Grassi et al 2003;Trasobares and Pukkala 2004;Diaci et al 2019), although processes such as deforestation, overgrazing and soil degradation with desertification, replacement by shrubs and fire-prone secondary conifer plantations must be considered. More than 95% of fires are caused by human activities, making societal measures essential (e.g.…”

“…This represents promising potential for its success. In the Karst it is often one of the dominant species, and it is also promising in gradual conversion by means of natural regeneration (Diaci et al, 2019). We expect that in the long term Quercus petraea might be the most successful of all of the planted species, although perhaps not the best quality.…”
