“…Some patterns observed in this study are reinforced by the results of other MBfR studies. The maximum concentration of acetate was obtained when other metabolites were zero or negligible, same as Shen et al (2018) with the highest reported acetate concentration as 27.9 g/L (930 mM C). Similarly, long HRTs promoted MCE, with the longest carboxylate reported being 8‐C octanoate (up to 0.77 g/L), which was achieved in batch mode at 35°C (Zhang, Ding, Zhang, et al, 2013).…”

“…The MBfR has been widely used to achieve microbial reduction of a broad spectrum of oxidized water pollutants (Van Ginkel et al, 2010; Lai et al, 2016; Martin & Nerenberg, 2012; Zhou et al, 2014), but its application as a production system is relatively new. Ten recent studies (Chen & Ni, 2016; Shen et al, 2014, 2018; Wang et al, 2017; Wang, Dai, Wang, et al, 2018; Wang, Dai, Xia, et al, 2018; Wang, Zhang, Zhang, et al, 2018; Yasin et al, 2014; Zhang, Ding, Shen, et al, 2013; Zhang, Ding, Zhang, et al, 2013) demonstrated the production of carboxylates in MBfRs from mixtures of H 2 , CO, and CO 2 , at different concentrations. We compiled these studies in Table S1, where half of the studies used an H 2 /CO 2 gas mixture.…”

“…Operational conditions tested include membrane interfacial area, syngas composition, continuous or batch liquid operation mode, temperature, and pH. Shen et al [52] investigated the conversion of CO/H 2 (40:60) by mixed culture in a closed-end HFM biofilm reactor by varying the: membrane surface area, liquid operation mode, and temperature. The main products obtained for a sequential batch experiment at 35 C were: acetate, butyrate, hexanoate, and octanoate.…”

“…The medium in that study was supplemented with vitamins. Besides, a hollow fibre membrane biofilm reactors has been found to produce acetate (4.22 g/L), butyrate (1.35 g/L), caproate (0.88 g/L) and caprylate (0.52 g/l) at 35 o C, but no alcohols were detected (Shen et al, 2018). Modulating the partial pressure composition, i.e.…”
