Turbulence is one of the least investigated environmental factors impacting the ecophysiology of phytoplankton, both at the community and individual species level. Here, we investigated, for the first time, the effect of a turbulence gradient (${\rm{Reynolds\ number}}$, from ${\rm{R}}{{\rm{e}}}_{\rm{\lambda }} = 0$ to ${\rm{R}}{{\rm{e}}}_{\rm{\lambda }} = 360$) on two species of the marine diatom Pseudo-nitzschia and their associated bacterial communities under laboratory conditions. Cell abundance, domoic acid (DA) production, chain formation, and Chl a content of P. fraudulenta and P. multiseries were higher for intermediate turbulence (${\rm{R}}{{\rm{e}}}_{\rm{\lambda }} = 160$ or $240$). DA was detectable only in P. multiseries samples. These observations were supported by transcriptomic analyses results which suggested the turbulence related induction of the expression of the DA production locus, with a linkage to an increased photosynthetic activity of the total metatranscriptome. This study also highlighted a higher richness of the bacterial community associated with the non-toxic strain of P. fraudulenta in comparison to the toxic strain of P. multiseries. Bacillus was an important genus in P. multiseries cultures (relative abundance 15.5%) and its highest abundances coincided with the highest DA levels. However, associated bacterial communities of both Pseudo-nitzschia species did not show clear patterns relative to turbulence intensity.

In order to improve the physical quality and even ability of swimmers, this study built OpenCL technology for the swimming movement design system of swimmers, so as to design a series of movements. Combined with the capture system, this paper captures and processes the athletes’ movements, obtains the key position information, and calculates the accurate data. It can provide effective guidance for accurately positioning athletes’ swimming movements, enable users to have a clearer understanding of their own movements, improve users’ movements, and enhance the system operation effect. According to the technology and application requirements of virtual swimming training simulator, the overall design scheme of the device is determined. From the point of view of ensuring the comfort and safety of simulated virtual swimming, the design, installation, and strength verification of the supporting structure are carried out. Hardware design and selection shall be carried out according to the requirements of head position detection and virtual environment presentation, including the design of positioning ball set, camera selection, and VR head display selection. The software functions of head position detection program and virtual scene program are designed according to the requirements of natural human-computer interaction. The designed swimming guidance training system has complete functions and stable operation and can be used as an auxiliary tool for swimming training.

Zooplankton in a quiescent environment can detect predators by hydrodynamic sensing, triggering powerful escape responses. Since turbulent strain tends to mask the hydrodynamic signal, the organisms should avoid such regions, but it is not known how they accomplish this. We found a simple, robust, and highly efficient strategy that relies on measuring the sign of gradients of squared strain. Plankton following this strategy show very strong spatial clustering, and align against the local flow velocity, facilitating mate finding and feeding. The strategy has the potential to reconcile competing fitness pressures. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
