Copper losses to slags obtained from the El Teniente process

Abstract: The smelting and converting El Teniente process for copper concentrates as well as slag cleaning furnace technologies to treat slags coming out from the El Teniente furnaces are widely applied today in Chile and around the world. Several industrial applications of this process have shown their ability to treat copper concentrates in a wide range of chemical and mineralogical compositions. Main operational parameters determining performance of the process are: oxygen enriched air flow rate; degree of oxygen enr… Show more

“…Imris et al 7,8 in studies at the Caletones smelter identified 'copper prills' and chalcocite (b-Cu 2 S) inclusions in TC slag samples and chalcocite (b-Cu 2 S) in slag samples from the slag cleaning furnace. The total copper dissolved in TC slag was estimated based on the copper level in flotation tailings (0?80-1?05 wt-%Cu) from laboratory slag flotation experiments.…”

“…[4][5][6][7] On the other hand, entrained matte solidifies as mixtures of copper sulphide and/or copper iron sulphide phases having a stoichiometry depending on the composition of the entrained matte. [8][9][10][11] With high grade copper mattes, the particles solidify as rich Cu 22x S solid solutions such as chalcocite and also as digenite. It is noted that these phases are completely miscible at temperatures above 700uC.…”

“…Thus, reactions with other oxides (e.g., FeO) can occur, forming more stable oxides (e.g., Fe 3 O 4 ) and metallic copper. For example, during primary copper production, cuprous oxide reacts with ferrous oxide as follows [6,20,23] :…”

“…The main influencing factors are temperature, oxygen partial pressure, [2,[5][6][7] chemical activity of the metal, [2] and composition of the slag and matte. [2,[5][6][7] Mechanically entrained metal refers to entrapped or floating unsettled droplets. In primary copper production, both metallic and matte droplets are entrained, while in secondary copper production, these losses are mainly metallic copper droplets.…”
