Corn Silage Supplemented with Pomegranate (Punica granatum) and Avocado (Persea americana) Pulp and Seed Wastes for Improvement of Meat Characteristics in Poultry Production

Abstract: In the present study, pomegranate peels, avocado peels, and seed vacuum microwave extraction solid by-products were supplemented in corn silage in order to investigate the effects on meat quality and growth rate in broiler chicken. There were 50 broilers, divided in two groups, treated with experimental or usual feed for 43 days (group A: 25 broilers fed with avocado and pomegranate by-products and group B: 25 broilers fed with corn-silage used as control). The results showed that broiler chickens fed with a d… Show more

“…In a study conducted on pomegranate by-products, feed cost per unit of weight gain was lower in experimental groups fed 1% or 2% fermented pomegranate byproducts in the diet compared to the basal diet containing solely conventional feeds [158]. In another study, the feeding cost in broilers fed a diet containing corn-silage was 1.95 -fold higher than the feeding cost in broilers fed a diet containing avocado and pomegranate by-products [228]. In a study evaluating the economic feasibility of OP in broiler diets, feed cost per kg live weight was statistically higher when 100 g/kg OP was fed compared to the inclusion level of 50 g/kg OP.…”

“…This supplementation had a positive impact on meat quality, particularly in the improvement of the fatty acid composition, such as ω-3 fatty acids, a reduced ratio of ω6/ω3 and cholesterol levels, and enhanced antioxidant activity. Additionally, compared to the commercial corn silage used for broiler breeding, this mixture was 50% less expensive [88]. Utilizing agricultural waste, particularly avocado residues, in the optimized concentrations for feed formulations could be an intriguing strategy for cutting expenses while promoting sustainability and environmental welfare.…”

“…Pomegranate pulp also contains crude protein, ber, vitamins, minerals, and sugars (Aruna et al, 2016). Addition of a mixture of pomegranate avocado by-products in broiler chickens' diet, showed signi cant differences in chicken leg meat quality, signi cantly improving the level of proteins and fatty acids content in breast and leg meat, respectively (Leontopoulos et al, 2021). The addition of pomegranate peel powder to broiler diets has a good effect on the growth rate, blood serum metabolites, immunological parameters, the quality of meat, and the health aspects (Abdel Baset et al, 2020).…”
