Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting;

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate effect of vancomycin in producing nephrotoxicityand oxidative stress in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. Study designand technique: Cross-sectional study, convenient sampling. Setting: Faisalabad institute ofcardiology, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Period: 09 months. Material and Methods: Total 50 patientswho were undergoing coronory artery bypass grafting were enrolled in the study based onconvenience sampling after taking consent. Participants received a single dose of vancomycin(15mg/kg) before coronory artery bypass grafting and then twice a day after surgery for fivedays. Blood was collected at day 0, 4 and 7 and checked for serum creatinine, blood urea, bloodurea nitrogen, catalase, melondialdehyde, total oxidant status and total antioxidant capacityin order to determine vancomycin induced nephrotoxicity and oxidative stress. Results: Thelevels of serum creatinine, blood urea and blood urea nitrogen were significantly high at day 4and 7 as compare to day 0 with p-value 0.001.Serum catalase was significantly decreased atday 4 and 7 as compare to day 0 with p-value 0.001 while the level of serum melondialdehydewas increased significantly at day 4 and 7 in comparison with day 0 with p-value 0.01. Totalantioxidant capacity was significantly decreased while total oxidant status was increased at day4 and 7 in comparison with day 0 with p-value 0.001 each.
