Objective: As there is a dearth of researches targeting the Indian population on this issue, we decided to conduct a survey to assess the psychological impact of COVID-19 on mental health and quality of life of Indians. Methods: In this Cross-Sectional study, a total of 2245 participants above 16 y of age were included. Mental health variables were assessed via depression, anxiety and stress subscale (DASS-21), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI-7), Patient health questionnaire (PHQ-15), Quality of life (QoL-5) and social media exposure. Results: The multivariate logistic regression demonstrated female (OR-1.17, 95% CI: 0.99 to 1.38) had significantly higher depression scores whereas, housewife had higher depression (OR-1.68, 95% CI: 1.33 to 2.13), anxiety (OR-1.64, 95% CI: 1.15 to 2.35), insomnia (OR-1.32, 95% CI: 1.14 to 1.53), somatic symptoms (OR-1.76, 95% CI: 1.21 to 2.57). Front line workers had a higher psychological impact with increased scores of anxieties (OR-1.23, 95% CI: 0.79 to 1.53), stress (OR-1.82, 95% CI: 0.76 to 2.55), insomnia (OR-1.65, 95% CI: 1.31 to 2.09). Lower education level had significantly higher score in depression (OR-1.14, 95% CI: 0.73 to 1.32), insomnia (OR-2.42, 95% CI: 2.07 to 2.84), somatic symptoms (OR-2.59, 95% CI: 1.80 to 3.37). Poor physical health, social media exposure was significantly associated with heightened anxiety score. Conclusion: There is a need for psychological intervention as the dynamics and severity of COVID-19 is rapidly changing. These findings could guide the public health authorities to target and implement health measures to combat the pandemic.

Global emergency due to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-COV-2) and associated COVID-19 necessitates an engaged, integrated, interdisciplinary, and rapid response from the scientific community. India has had 4·4 million cases of COVID-19, the second most in the world after the USA, with 75,062 officially confirmed deaths from the disease as of Sept 10, 2020. Total of 27,688,740 confirmed cases and 8, 99,315 death cases were reported as per WHO on Sept 10, 2020 at 10.28 AM, CEST. The United States of America, India, Brazil and Russia recorded the highest cases in the world. We describe here, the outbreak of COVID-19 among the five major South Indian states and the data were collected from various Government authorised websites and the same were comparatively studied among five different states from March to July 15, 2020. In south India, Tamil Nadu reports the highest cases when compared to other states and the least cases were found to be among the state of Kerala as per the study period.

Some Novel Manganese(III) Mixed Ligand Complexes and its Decolourization Studies

Some novel mixed ligand complexes of Mn(III) with glycine ligand namely [Mn(gly)2 Cl(en)], [Mn(gly)2 Br(en)], [Mn(gly)2 N3 (en)] and [Mn(gly)2 NCS(en)] have been synthesized starting from Mn(gly)2 Cl, Mn(gly)2 Br, Mn(gly)2N3 and Mn(gly)2 NCS respectively. These newly synthesized complexes have been characterized by UV/Vis, FT-IR and Mass spectrometry. The spectroscopic data suggest distorted octahedral geometry for all these mixed ligand complexes. The λmax values of these complexes for 5T2g → 5Eg transitions are 482 nm for [Mn(gly)2N3(en)], 488 for [Mn(gly)2NCS(en)], 486 for [Mn(gly)2 Br(en)] and 484 for [Mn(gly)2Cl(en)], all these transitions are red shifted in comparison to their parent complexes. The ligand field parameters such as 10 Dq, B and β have also been calculated and suggest covalent metal ligand bonding. One peculiar finding is that the FT-IR spectra shows frequencies for both free and coordinated NH2 group in all complexes indicating that the ethylenediamine ligand present here is non bridging in nature. The mass spectrometry results show molecular ion peaks at m/z 300, 345, 307 and 323 for [Mn(gly)2Cl(en)], [Mn(gly)2Br(en)], [Mn(gly)2N3(en)] and [Mn(gly)2NCS(en)] respectively. The coordination of ethylenediamine to Mn(III) enhances its efficiency towards decolourization methyl red dye.
