Corrective Feedback, Negotiation of Meaning and Grammar Development: Learner-Learner and Learner-Native Speaker Interaction in ESL

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the role of corrective feedback and negotiation of meaning within an Interactionist Approach (Long, 1996) in native speaker-Second Language learner and L2 learner-L2 learner interactions. While negotiation of meaning (NoM) and corrective feedback (CF) between native and nonnative speakers has been shown to be helpful for the nonnatives, it remains unclear whether CF and NoM between learners of equivalent or different proficiency produce greater negotiation of meaning and successf… Show more

“…As is shown in the above studies, the major trend of the studies concerning interaction is from the overall effects of interaction (Gass &Varonis, 1994;Mackey, 1999;Li, 2012;Bagheri et al, 2012;etc) to some specific language development such as grammatical development (Braidi, 1995), recasts (Philp, 2003), task types and grouping in interaction (Kawaguchi & Ma, 2012). Participants were among college students, with only a few with middle school students (Hu, 2012).…”

“…In addition, Kawaguchi and Ma's (2012) study also attempted to probe into the effect of interaction on learners' grammatical development. More comprehensive than other studies, this study began with the task-based interaction between traditional native-nonnative interaction (native English speakers and second language learners), as well as interaction between second language learners (with one group of same proficiency level and the other different).…”

“…Before doing the task, the researcher instructed the student to help their friend who faced the problem by giving correction. Kawaguchi (2012) claimed that the purpose of providing such corrective instruction was to draw L2 learners' attention to their non-target like production and assist their L2 learning. From the result, it could be concluded that many students in this research ignored the researcher's instruction to be aware of the mistake.…”

The study began with the task-based interaction between traditional native-nonnative interaction, as well as interaction between second language learners themselves, where corrective feedback and negotiation of meaning were taken into consideration.…”
