“…Collectively, these findings suggest that embodied interventions, including Qigong, that encourage adopting an open or expansive bodily posture (e.g., greater VertHead) whilst maintaining a self-focus, may help to reduce anxiety and more generally improve affective state ( Osypiuk et al, 2018 ). Our observations of the interdependence of upper body posture and affect is also supported by physiological studies showing links between stress-induced changes in neck and upper trunk tone assessed with electromyography and dysregulated autonomic tone assessed with indices of heart rate variability ( Kristiansen et al, 2009 ; Kang et al, 2012 ; Santos-de-Araújo et al, 2019 ; Scheer et al, 2021 ). The interdependence of posture and anxiety is exhibited in a rich body of observational and experimental studies linking fall-related anxiety and acrophobia (fear of heights), neuromusculoskeletal physiology, and whole-body postural control ( Adkin and Carpenter, 2018 ).…”

“…Recent imaging study investigating effects of hardness and shape of UR foam mattresses demonstrated that the skin and soft tissue are likely to be affected by the shape of the UR mattress, not by its hardness ( Kumagai et al, 2019 ). Inappropriate cervical tension appears to lead to increased autonomic nervous activity as reflected in the LF/HF ratio ( Santos-de-Araujo et al, 2019 ; Shafiq, McGregor & Murphy, 2014 ), suggesting that the diminished muscle tone, especially in the neck region, owing to BC bedding is beneficial for proper regulation of autonomic function for napping.…”

“…A signi cant decrease in sympathetic balance with BC use may be attributed to a reduction in the cervical muscle load, adjusting an automatically suitable posture during napping by means of elasticity. Inappropriate cervical tension appears to lead to increased autonomic nervous activity as re ected in the LF/HF ratio [26,27], suggesting that the diminished muscle tone, especially in the neck region, owing to BC bedding is bene cial for proper regulation of autonomic function for napping.…”
