Correlation between Fiberoptic Nasal Endoscopy and Acoustic Rhinometry in Adults without Nasal Complaints

Abstract: The results confirm an anatomic correlation between the two examination methods, identifying the first constriction as the nasal valve, the second constriction as the head of the inferior nasal turbinate, and the third constriction as the head of the middle turbinate. The fourth constriction did not correspond to the choanal region.

“…Twenty‐one articles were identified relating to acoustic rhinometry, rhinogram, nasal echogram or NV. The cross‐sectional area of the first notch (CSA1) appears immediately after 0 cm and appears to correspond to the NV, 11–19 the ‘ isthmus nasi ’, 6,20–22 ‘probably’ the ‘ ostium internum ’, 23 an area near the NV, 24 the junction of the nosepiece and the nostril, 25,26 the junction of the nosepiece and the ‘ isthmus nasi ’, 27 the nostril 28 or it may also be artefactual 29,30 (Table 1). The cross‐sectional area of the second notch (CSA2) appears to correspond to the anterior end of the inferior turbinate 6,11–15,17–24,30 or to the NV 25–28,31 (Table 2).…”

“…Corey et al. 24 stated that the anatomical correlation of the CSA1 is not clearly delineated, but seems to correspond to the region ‘near the NV’, and in another similar study the authors affirm that the CSA1 is the NV 19 . Their assertion was based on the fact that, in both studies, the CSA1 was much more anteriorly‐located than the endoscopically‐measured distance from the NV.…”

“…Rhinomanometry and acoustic rhinometry are widely used for quantifying nasal patency. [1][2][3][4][14][15][16] Instead of using a nozzle or a facemask, the Toronto System of active posterior rhinomanometry 8-10 uses a headout body plethysmograph, which, although cumbersome, avoids the risk of artifacts that can result from displacement of compliant anterior nasal tissues by adjoining labial and other mobile facial tissues by a facemask. The head-out body plethysmograph has many different uses, and it accommodates all patients comfortably and independently of body and head size and children prefer it to a facemask.…”
